5 Common Mistakes When Buying Home Decorative Lights

When it comes to home decoration, everyone wants a perfect home — the most beautiful and harmonious one. Whether it's the color scheme, decorating style, furnishings, furniture, walls, floor tiles, or the most essential element that cannot be overlooked: lighting fixtures.

Many people make a major mistake by giving too little importance to decorative lighting. Little do they know that lighting and light beams are the primary and most crucial factor in creating the Mood & Tone of a home. Choosing and designing your lighting well can make your home feel 100% more inviting. Therefore, good home decoration should give great importance to lighting as one of its most critical elements.

Today we will talk about the common mistakes people make and how to fix them, so your home looks its absolute best — and with minimal construction issues as well. Let's take a look!

1. Choose Your Home Decoration Style First!

Before selecting any lighting fixtures, the very first thing you should do is decide on your home's decoration style. Doing this will save you a great deal of time. By choosing a style first, you as the homeowner won't encounter the problem of selecting furniture or lighting that doesn't match the overall design, forcing you to start over. Furniture and decorative lighting for your home or condo should all align with the home's main style — whether it's Classic, Contemporary, Modern, or Luxury. When the decoration theme is consistent, your home is guaranteed to look beautiful! So decide on your home's style first, then choose your furniture and lighting to match.

2. The Role of Each Type of Lighting

We should understand the role of each type of lighting and how they differ, so we don't use them incorrectly like most people do — which results in poor light and shadow balance and a lack of drama in the space. The types are as follows:

2.1) Ambient Light

Also known by many as general lighting — this is the overall illumination that allows us to see the room when we walk in. Most commonly, downlights are used as the primary source of ambient light. Nowadays, however, interior designers have started using LED strip lights installed in cove ceilings to emit ambient light as well. The key to achieving a beautiful home with ambient lighting is to choose Downlight GU10 type fixtures with a narrow beam angle of 10–38 degrees, using LED bulbs for energy efficiency while producing beautiful light reminiscent of a luxury hotel or fine restaurant. Using narrow-angle GU10 downlights is easy on the eyes because the entire space isn't uniformly bright, and it creates natural light and shadow. Creating light and shadow in a room is essential to making it look beautiful. Most people make the mistake of lighting the entire room evenly — like an office — which strips the room of character.

2.2) Task Light

Simply put, task lighting is lighting designed for activities that require visual focus. Task lights are installed at specific points where you need to work or use your eyes. For example, a desk lamp at a reading chair is a task light; LED strip lights under kitchen cabinets to illuminate your cooking area are another example; a pendant light hanging above a work desk is yet another example of task lighting.

The primary purpose of all these is to provide additional lighting at points where you need to engage in visually-demanding activities. Naturally, choosing a stylish and distinctive fixture will also make your room look much better.

2.3) Accent Light

Simply put, accent lighting is used to highlight specific points in the room, creating drama and beauty through deliberate use of light and shadow — and this is what most people are missing when designing or decorating their homes. Consider the example of a hotel bar below, where LED Strip Light 24V Tron Series is installed behind a large mirror to create a glowing edge effect, beautifully highlighting the mirror in a striking and attractive way.

2.4) Decorative Light

Also known as decorative lamps, the primary role of decorative lighting is decoration — functioning like a piece of furniture in the home. It should emit light that isn't too bright or glaring, because ultimately the main purpose of decorative lighting is to enhance the beauty of the space through its distinctive and unique design. However, a common mistake that makes homes look less attractive is using decorative lights as if they were task lights — using high-wattage, high-lumen bulbs for working light. The problem is that excessively bright light is uncomfortable to look at and causes the decorative fixture to lose its unique character. Therefore, distinctive design should be the primary consideration when choosing decorative lights, and the light should not be so bright that it becomes uncomfortable to look at.

3. Don't Over-Illuminate

That's right — don't use too much light. This is another technique that will make your home more beautiful. As we keep emphasizing: decorative lamps should not emit light so bright that it becomes uncomfortable to look at. If it's a lamp that exposes the bulb, the bulb itself should be gold-coated so the light it emits doesn't strain your eyes, and you should choose warm white light (Warm White 3000K) for a comfortable visual experience.

4. Choosing a Master Piece

In one home, you can install lighting in many places — such as ceiling lights in the entrance foyer, desk lamps on the work table, floor lamps beside the sofa, wall lights along corridors, crystal chandeliers above the dining table, pendant lights above the living room, and chandeliers in the staircase foyer. You can install lights in many places, but at a minimum, for your home to truly stand out like something from a magazine, you should focus on the light above the dining table, the staircase foyer light, and the living room light — these are what we call the Master Piece.

Many people mistakenly think a Master Piece must be one large, single light fixture. In reality, that's not the case. While using one large fixture per focal point is a widely used approach, if you want your home to look more stylish, you can use several smaller pendant lights grouped together at different heights to create a unique and one-of-a-kind character for your room.

Example of using a single large Master Piece fixture above the dining table — creating excellent dramatic effect.

Another example: using multiple single-headed lights grouped together as a multi-drop arrangement to create a Master Piece — equally elegant and distinctively unique, unlike any other home.

5. Interior Designer + Lighting Designer

One of the most common mistakes people make is designing and planning everything themselves without hiring or seeking help from a professional. What we often see is that without a clear design direction, the chances of a room turning out perfect are quite slim. Some people may have a natural artistic eye and can choose great styles and pieces to decorate their home — but many others struggle to visualize the design in their heads. Therefore, we recommend consulting an interior designer. LAMP & LIGHT also has a team of Lighting Designer consultants to help advise you.
